Oak City Church has partnered with Family Promise for several years. Family Promise is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation that responds to the needs of homeless families in Wake County.
Family Promise provides temporary stability to homeless families as they work toward permanent independence. Family Promise promotes a sense of community and self-worth, and assists families in learning the skills necessary to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency. Professional staff provides families with daily, individual case management.
Family Promise uses local churches to host families that are on the edge of homelessness. Oak City Church serves as a host church 2 weeks each year. As a host church, we are responsible for the overall evening housing of the guests each week. In order to make a host week successful, there are several ways for volunteers to become involved:
- Serve on a “set up” or “take down” or “laundry” team
- Coordinate donations of food
- Drive the van
- Serve dinner
- Plan or lead evening activities
- Stay overnight
Even host children and youth may help by playing with the guest children. These activities are coordinated by one lead volunteer at the congregation. The week gives the church a great chance to show our neighbors the love of Christ and actively be a blessing to them and their families.
